Set the Sail

Steve’s songwriting technique consists of writing the guitar riffs and then struggling to find inspiration for lyrics.  He started writing Set the Sail when he was still living in Idaho.  The guitar part was completed and he used the theme of his dream woman as the basis for the lyrics.  Little did he know that it was a foreshadow to actually meeting the woman of his dreams, Jojo.

Originally the vocal line was “Can’t seem to get you off of my mind” and when he would sing along with Garageband in the mancave, Jojo would come upstairs to watch, which naturally led to “Can’t seem to get you off of my mind Jojo!” and it was the truth because she became his whole world from the day they met in person on January 3, 2023.  There was one more change to the original lyrics.  Previously, the chorus finished with “and I love you, more yes I love you, each and every day” but that seemed kind of weak leading back into the hook and became “and I love you, more yes I love you, yeah yeah!” with the whole band singing the yeah yeah’s.

The artwork for the single was created by Steve in Inkscape.  It came out okay, similar to the Morning After original artwork.  However, shortly after the release of these first two singles, Steve discovered the power of AI image generation, which could be combined with traditional object oriented drawing in Inkscape.  Well, it was too late to change the artwork for Morning After and Set the Sail on Apple Music, Spotify and other digital platforms, but that couldn’t prevent creating some cool artwork for posters, t-shirts and other merchandise.

The other great thing about the AI art is that there’s no existing copyright, so it can be used freely.  During this time Steve was working on YouTube Shorts to get the algorithm to find them.  Most were made using Canva, but Steve also discovered the power DaVinci Resolve for video editing.  Steve also had been dabbling in 3D animation using Blender, and created a few animations in Blender and combined them with images and videos in DaVinci Resolve.  Shout out to the guys on YouTube doing Blender tutorials… you guys rock!
