Locomotive was heavily influenced by UFO’s Lights Out and the Plimsouls’ Zero Hour, cover songs that Steve’s band Peer Pressure played the their infancy. Guitar riffing from F#m to Emaj and throw in some Bmaj to Amaj and the occasional C#m and some crunch guitar and you have a rock song. One of the other influences on Steve’s songwriting is some advice his cousin, Daniel Malloy, gave him, which was “it’s not always where you put the notes, but where you put the rests” and it really is the truth… you have got to have some breaks to make it interesting!
Now the lyrics aren’t really overt, but they’re not really child appropriate either. Let’s just say that they should only be between a husband and wife. The song was written in Steve’s younger days when he was a bit of a wild card, but he doesn’t promote promiscuity in any form.
During long drives the band listens to music from Steve’s iPhone including, but not limited to: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Kool and the Gang, Depeche Mode, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bon Jovi. On Bon Jovi’s We Weren't Born To Follow, Jon says “Guitar!” before Richie Sambora’s guitar solo, and they thought that it would be cute for Jojo to say that before Steve’s guitar solo on Locomotive.
